May 2011

We are now entering the final month of classes for the 2010-2011 school year! Staff and students are working hard to make sure they are making best use of their time during the last few weeks.

End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) will take place Monday, May 16 through Thursday, May 19. We are still in need of several more proctors. We need at least 10 more proctors on Monday, 8 more on Tuesday, 13 more on Wednesday, and 3 more on Thursday. If you are interested in proctoring, please contact Shayna Quilty at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 980.297.3679 for more information.

Thank you for all of the support you have all provided during this school year!

Warm regards,
Keith Burnam and Tiffany Flowers-Washington
(co-founders and school leaders)

Call for Mentors

Several members of the Pride of 2015, the first class of 8th grade students that will be promoted from KIPP Charlotte, have been accepted to prestigious private schools across the country. Students have been offered enrollment at:

Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, Cannon School, Providence Day, Asheville School, Christ School (Arden, NC), Saint Marys (Raleigh, NC), Choate Rosemary Hall (CT), Episcopal High School (VA), Groton (CT), St. Andrews (DE), St. Marks (MA), and Ethel Walker (NY).

If you have connections with any of these schools, we would appreciate your support in mentoring these students as they prepare to transition to a new community. They are truly trailblazers as the first class of students representing KIPP Charlotte and we would love for you to share any words of wisdom as they prepare for this part of their journey to college. Please contact Emily Kronemeyer at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 980.297.4714 if you are interested in mentoring any of these wonderful students.

The KIPP Charlotte Scholars’ Breakfast
Presented by Wells Fargo

Thank you to those of you who attended the KIPP Charlotte Scholars’ Breakfast Presented by Wells Fargo on April 7! We would also like to thank the parents and community members who volunteered to help make sure everything ran smoothly. The event was a great success, bringing in $147,450 over the next five years. Guests enjoyed presentations from our presenting sponsor, Wells Fargo, as well as from an 8th grade student at KIPP Charlotte, a senior at KIPP Gaston College Preparatory, and both of KIPP Charlotte’s co-founders, Keith Burnam and Tiffany Flowers-Washington. We hope you enjoyed the program as much as we did, and that you learned something about KIPP Charlotte. Thank you for your support!

The Wells Fargo Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Torie Leslie!

Torie Leslie (8th grade Technology) was the recipient of the 2011 Wells Fargo Teacher of the Year award. When nominating her for the award, Mr. Stich (8th grade English) wrote the following:

“Each morning, Ms. Leslie is the first one in our building (usually arriving to school before six A.M.). She volunteers to manage student paperwork for our grade level, founded the recycling club, consistently achieves seventy to eighty percent of her students passing benchmark tests, and takes the initiative to print off schedules for the entire team on Fridays and Saturdays. She also meets with team members, parents, and students on a regular basis to proactively resolve conflicts in a solution-oriented fashion.

“Each of these instances show that Ms. Leslie manifests the qualities of the teacher of the year. Her dedication to KIPP Charlotte cannot be questioned. Likewise, her willingness to promote a positive service-oriented culture has improved the overall culture of the eighth grade and of the entire school.”

All of the amazing teachers at KIPP Charlotte go above and beyond, but Ms. Leslie still manages to stand out. Congratulations, Ms. Leslie, and thank you for all that you do!
