April 2011

We have completely revamped the KIPP Charlotte website! Check it out at www.KIPPCharlotte.org.

With the End of Grade tests fast approaching, KIPPsters are working hard and we are all focusing on results. It is now more than ever that we need your help. During the week of End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) tests, we will need several volunteers to act as proctors and help organize materials.

We will need at least:
21 proctors on Mon, May 16
23 proctors on Tues, May 17
23 proctors on Wed, May 18
11 proctors on Thurs, May 19

Proctors will need to be on campus from 7:45am until noon. Proctors can volunteer for as many or as few days as they are able.

If you are interested in volunteering during EOG/EOC week, please contact Shayna Quilty at 980.297.3679, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or Amanda Prothero at 980-406-2419, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thank you in advance for your help, and for your continued support of the Pride!

Warm regards,
Keith Burnam and Tiffany Flowers-Washington
(co-founders and school leaders)

In the Students’ Words
“March Madness, KIPP style”
By Camille G. and Phillip C.

Each year at KIPP Charlotte, students participate in a trivia tournament that follows the model of NCAA college basketball March Madness. Members of each Pride (grade level) are seeded and compete against one another in academic trivia. Two students explain the process:

Every March, we separate the grades, rank students based on a variety of skills, and place their names on tournament brackets in the cafeteria. The tournament is about academic skill and involves competing against our Pridemates. During lunch and Pride Time, students from each Pride participate in March Madness competitions to see who will advance to the next round. Students can be questioned on trivia from any of the academic subjects they study at KIPP, so we are encouraged to study every night. Each day, the KIPPsters anxiously see who will advance to the next round. Whoever wins the tournament will win a grand prize and pride in his/her tremendous victory. The tournament is all about good academics and having fun in competition. It encourages positive student interaction and the development of social skills.

Who will be the top champion? You’ll have to wait and see how March Madness ends.

Focus on Results
“Choice and Commitment”
By Mr. Joey Plum, 8th Grade Math

Niasia (Pride of 2015) noticed that her grades were not where she wanted them to be in Algebra and, rather than complain, she got into gear and asked for help. She had help from Ms. Leslie in the morning, she called me for help at night, had help from her mentor, and stayed after school. Her grades still weren’t the highest but she saw improvement and she kept pushing for more growth. On last month’s benchmark, she grew 25 points! Her score would have qualified for a middle 3 on the End of Course test. Niasia’s response: “How can I get better, Mr. Plum?”

KIPP’s Got Talent

KIPP Charlotte Talent Show

On Friday, April 1, KIPPsters proved that they are talented both in and out of the classroom. Thirty students put on powerful performances in the KIPP Charlotte Talent Show. Students in the Prides of 2015, 2016, and 2017 (8th, 7th, and 6th grades) bared their souls on the stage as they sang, danced, played piano, rapped, stepped, and read original poems. There was never a dull moment with emcees Mr. Brown (6th & 7th grade Science) and Ms. Hailey (7th & 8th grade History), and Mr. Brooks (6th grade Math) as DJ. We are grateful to Ms. Cox for putting together such a wonderful program, and to the students who shared their range of talents with a supportive audience of about 200 students and family members. There’s no denying that KIPP’s got talent!
